Ron Versus Mimi

Issues

Ron Varasteh

Mimi Walters

Money in Politics

I will demand that Congress start working for WE the People and not Wall Street and Billionaire Class lobbyists. During my first-term, I will fight to overturn Citizens United and push for effective campaign finance laws such as the Disclose Act.

Every day in US Congress, I will speak for you, I will fight for you, and I will win for you.

Varasteh’s Congressional Pledge:

  • Restore WE the People’s government back to it’s rightful owners
  • Election reform/Money out of politics
  • Keep corporations and unions out of elections
  • Lobbyist transparency
  • Bill transparency
  • Leaner government by eliminating earmarks, loopholes, and subsidies
  • Protect whistleblowers
  • Reform subsidies and tax-breaks granted to large businesses
  • Reform regulations that choke small and medium businesses from starting and growing
  • Standing up for WE the People
  • Not for sale

My opponent, Mimi Walters, is not working for WE the People. Instead, Walters is working for her Wall Street and Billionaire Class campaign contributors. See which industries are Walters' largest contributors here!

Mimi_Walters_2016_V2.png

Walters’ Voting/Support Record:

  • YES on bigger government for her special interests lobbyists
  • NO on ending subsidies and ending tax-breaks for large corporations
  • NOT standing up for WE the People

Tax Reform

Eliminate middle-class income tax; overhaul & simplify federal tax code; reduce small business tax & regulatory burden; and reduce corporate tax rate.

Varasteh’s Congressional Pledge:

  • NO income tax for everyone making $125K or less, until our economy is stabilized
  • Offset this revenue loss by imposing a marginal tax rate for those making more than $1.25M
  • At the same time we must reform tax loophole laws
  • Balance the budget and reduce the deficit, each and every year, once our economy stabilizes
  • Lower Corporate tax rates in order to be more competitive with the rest of the world
  • Standing up for WE the People
  • Not for sale

My opponent, Mimi Walters, voted to increase taxes on the middle-class 84.6% of the time. Walters also voted to support big business 100% of the time.

 Mimi_Walters_Voting_Record_V2.png

Walters’ Voting/Support Record:

  • YES on making the Bush tax cuts permanent (Bill sponsored by Lewis, R-KY; Bill HR 586)
  • YES on $99 B economic stimulus (Bill HR 3090)
  • Signed the Americans for Tax Reform "Taxpayer Protection Pledge" which protects the wealthiest of our citizens
  • NOT standing up for WE the People

 Foreign Policy / Defense

Instead of being quick to employ military force, we believe America should prioritize diplomacy and only use military force when all other reasonable alternatives have been exhausted.

Our approach to foreign policy prioritizes diplomacy while maintaining a robust deterrence and employing only small groups of commandos backed up by aerial reconnaissance when force is necessary.

Varasteh’s Congressional Pledge:

  • Diplomacy over War in Iran’s case and all other future potential conflicts
  • Remove our troops, as soon as safely possible, in Afghanistan’s case and many other countries we currently occupy
  • Cut unnecessary waste in our military spending
  • Standing up for WE the People
  • Not for sale

Waters’ blind pursuit of a hawkish foreign policy actually harms America’s national security by getting our country entangled in costly foreign misadventures and endless wars. It also winds up radicalizing many otherwise peaceful individuals across the world. Walters isn't fighting for WE the People. Instead, she is working for the Wall Street and Billionaire Class who are supporting her campaign (for more information on which industries contribute the most to Walters, see here).

Walters’s Voting/Support Record:

  • YES on authorizing military force in Iraq (Bill sponsored by Hastert, R-IL; Bill HJRes114)
  • YES on declaring Iraq part of War on Terror with no exit date (Resolution on Prevailing in the Global War on Terror; Bill HRES 861)
  • NO on redeploying US troops out of Iraq starting in 90 days (Out of Iraq Caucus bill; Bill H R 2237)
  • NO on investigating Bush impeachment for lying about Iraq (The Kucinich Privilege Resolution; Bill H.RES.1258)
  • NO on Iran nuclear deal (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action; Bill sponsored by Boehner, R-OH; Bill H R 3461)
  • NOT standing up for WE the People

Responsible Government

As your Congressman, I will pursue a fiscally responsible economic policy with the goal of balancing the budget and ultimately paying down our national debt. In doing so, smart budget cuts in military hardware should not be off the table.

Varasteh’s Congressional Pledge:

  • Restore WE the People’s government back to her rightful owners
  • Election finance reform/Money out of politics
  • Keep corporations and unions out of elections
  • Lobbyist transparency
  • Bill transparency
  • Leaner government by eliminating earmarks, loopholes, and subsidies
  • Protect whistleblowers
  • Reform subsidies and tax-breaks granted to large businesses
  • Reform regulations that choke small and medium businesses from starting and growing
  • Standing up for WE the People
  • Not for sale

Although Walters claims she’s fiscally responsible, Walters has consistently supported bloated, unbalanced budget bills that include funding for wasteful military hardware, large corporate welfare checks, and big-money special interests which annually increase our national debt.

My opponent, Mimi Walters, has done nothing for our district or our nation for that matter to help reverse this dangerous trend. She has been in US Congress and California Senate and Assembly for more than a decade overseeing the takeover of our beloved country by these special interests. Government can grow bigger, as long as it is helping her special interest campaign contributors. Once more, she is not working for WE the People. Instead, she is working for her Wall Street and Billionaire Class campaign contributors. See which industries are Walters' largest contributors here!

Walters’ Voting/Support Record:

  • YES on bigger government for her special interests campaign contributors
  • YES on protecting subsidies and tax-breaks granted to large businesses
  • NO on ending oil subsidies and ending tax-breaks for large businesses
  • NOT standing up for WE the People

Fair Free Trade

I will stop TPP and make sure that all our trade agreements are fair deals for the American people. I will also fight for trade agreements that encourage higher labor and environmental standards rather than cause a race to the bottom.

Varasteh’s Congressional Pledge:

  • Impose tariffs against countries that manipulate or undervalue their currency
  • Get us out of unfair free trade agreements
  • Standing up for WE the People
  • Not for sale

My opponent, Mimi Walters, supported NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement Implementation Bill; Bill HR 3450). Walters also favored implementation of CAFTA (Central America Free Trade Agreement Implementation Bill; Bill HR 3045). In addition, she intends to vote YES on implementing the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). Based on her voting record, Walters clearly wants America's current disastrous trade regime to continue without modification. Walters isn't fighting for WE the People. Instead, she is working for the Wall Street and Billionaire Class who are supporting her campaign (for more information on which industries contribute the most to Walters, see here).

Walters’ Voting/Support Record:

  • YES on implementing North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) (NAFTA Implementation Bill; Bill HR 3450)
  • YES on implementing Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) (CAFTA Implementation Bill; Bill HR 3045)
  • Supports and intends to vote YES on implementing the new trade deal Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)
  • NOT standing up for WE the People

Liberty, Public Safety, and Homeland Security

There should be a proper balance between national security and our fundamental rights. At the moment, however, the equilibrium between these two interests is way off-balance. If we continue to let the government erode our fundamental freedoms eventually we won't have any freedoms left.

Varasteh’s Congressional Pledge:

  • Government out of our private lives
  • Amend NDAA & Patriot Act by stripping away government’s overreach into our private lives and never allow them to become permanent
  • Cut unnecessary waste in our military hardware spending
  • Restrict no-bid defense contracts
  • Standing up for WE the People
  • Not for sale

My opponent, Mimi Walters, supported YES on restricting no-bid defense contracts (Accountability in Contracting Act; Bill H R 1362). Walters supported YES on $266 billion Defense Appropriations bill (Bill introduced by Lewis, R-CA; Bill HR 2561). She is not fighting for WE the People. She is fighting for her Wall Street and Billionaire Class Military Industrial Complex campaign contributors. See which industries are Walters' largest contributors here!

Walters’ Voting/Support Record:

  • YES on Patriot Act restricting no-bid defense contracts (Accountability in Contracting Act; Bill H R 1362)
  • YES on $266 billion Defense Appropriations bill (Bill introduced by Lewis, R-CA; Bill HR 2561)
  • NOT standing up for WE the People

 Education

I believe that public higher academic/trade education should be available to each and every American as a basic human right. No human should be denied the right to learn. Our economy can no longer stay competitive unless we start investing in young adults. They are the future of our country and must be supported-- they should not be discouraged from learning or saddled with overwhelming debt obligations.

Varasteh’s Congressional Pledge:

  • Education is a human right
  • Pro-public education
  • Attainable higher education
  • Tuition-free higher public education for those who cannot afford it
  • Standing up for WE the People
  • Not for sale

My opponent, Mimi Walters, has been consistent with her votes against public education whenever she has been given the chance in US Congress and California Senate and Assembly. She did not support allowing refinancing of student higher education debt. She is not working for the best interests of the students and parents of our district. With poor unemployment numbers in our district, education is now more important than ever. People need to learn new skills in order to get the type of jobs which the market is now demanding from them. She is not standing up for our students. Walters is not standing up for WE the PeopleShe is working for her Wall Street and Billionaire Class campaign contributors. See which industries are Walters' largest contributors here!

Walters’ Voting/Support Record:

  • NO on pro-public education bills
  • YES on anti-public education bills
  • NO on allowing refinancing of student higher education debt
  • NOT standing up for WE the People

 Small Business & Jobs

It shouldn’t be that so many large multi-national businesses receive tax breaks for exporting our jobs overseas. It shouldn’t be that so many corporate conglomerates receive subsidies from us while they’re simultaneously having windfall profits. Instead of burdening small businesses with taxes and regulations designed for large corporations, we should encourage their growth by reducing their tax burden and eliminating unnecessary regulations. This will free up time and money they can use to grow their businesses, hire new employees, and develop innovative products and services. Since small businesses employ the vast majority of people, it will also create jobs, thereby putting more income in the pockets of the middle-class and fueling economic growth.

Varasteh’s Congressional Pledge:

  • Support effective and fair jobs bills such as Congressional Progressive Caucus' "Budget for All"
  • WE the People must maintain our crucial infrastructure for commerce
  • Reform subsidies and tax-breaks granted to large agricultural businesses
  • Reform regulations that choke small and medium agricultural businesses from starting and growing
  • Reform offshore tax havens laws
  • Standing up for WE the People
  • Not for sale

The so called job-creators have been enjoying some of the lowest tax rates in nearly a century. In fact, statistics indicate that the rich are getting richer and the middle-class are getting poorer. When President Reagan was faced with a smaller recession than the one we are facing now, he raised taxes on the top earners 11 times during the 8 years of his presidency. Majority of the Republicans, including my opponent Mimi Walters, have offered little to nothing to spur job growth beyond the same old canards. This must change. We must move forward on an effective and fair jobs bill such as the Budget for All bill.

My opponent, Walters, has done nothing for our district or our nation for that matter to help create more jobs; jobs that our communities, our state, and our country so badly need in this fragile stage of the Great Recession. Once again, she is not standing for WE the Peopleshe is standing for special interest Wall Street and Billionaire Class campaign contributors. See which industries are Walters' largest contributors here!

Walters’ Voting/Support Record:

  • NO on all jobs bills proposed
  • NOT standing up for WE the People

 Environment

As a scientist, I believe the 99% of scientists who say that climate change is real and has been expedited by humans. Now is the time for us to take action to address climate change, and I will use my background in science to champion legislation designed to tackle this crisis.

Varasteh’s Congressional Pledge:

  • Address our contribution to climate change
  • Balance between environment and search for energy
  • Renewable energy tax credits
  • Repeal fossil fuel subsidies
  • Reform energy speculation market
  • Label our genetically engineered food
  • Standing up for WE the People
  • Not for sale

Walters supported YES on barring EPA from regulating greenhouse gases (Energy Tax Prevention Act; Bill H.910). Walters supported YES on de-authorizing "critical habitat" for endangered species (Threatened and Endangered Species Recovery Act; Bill HR 3824). Walters supported YES on speeding up approval of forest thinning projects (Healthy Forests Restoration Act; Bill HR 1904). She has consistently demonstrated that she is not for protecting our precious environment. I believe that if she had the power, she would just dismantle the entire EPA. According to The League of Conservation Voter, she is an anti-environmentalist.

Walters supported NO on tax credits for renewable electricity, with PAYGO offsets (Renewable Energy and Job Creation Tax Act; Bill H.R.7060). Walters supported NO on tax incentives for energy production and conservation (Renewable Energy and Job Creation Act; Bill HR6049). Walters supported NO on tax incentives for renewable energy (Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Tax Act; Bill H.R.5351). Walters supported NO on investing in homegrown biofuel (New Direction for Energy Independence; Bill HR3221). Walters supported NO on removing oil & gas exploration subsidies (Creating Long-Term Energy Alternatives for the Nation(CLEAN); Bill HR 6 ("First 100 hours")), Walters supported NO on starting implementation of Kyoto Protocol (Amendment sponsored by Olver, D-MA; Bill HR 4690). Walters supported NO on protecting free-roaming horses and burros (Restore Our American Mustangs Act; Bill H.R.1018). Simply stated, when one connects the dots here, one sees clearly that she has little interest in preserving the environment; rather, she wants to sustain our insatiable addictive appetite for oil. She wants to continue to help her oil buddies and campaign contributors in any way possible including giving them our taxpayers’ money in the form of subsidies when they’ve been enjoying record profit years during the Great Recession. She is opposed to energy independence, according to Campaign for America’s Future. Walters is not standing up for WE the People. She is working for her Wall Street and Billionaire Class campaign contributors. See which industries are Walters' largest contributors here!

Walters’ Voting/Support Record:

  • NO on tax credits for renewable electricity, with PAYGO offsets (Renewable Energy and Job Creation Tax Act; Bill H.R.7060)
  • NO on tax incentives for energy production and conservation (Renewable Energy and Job Creation Act; Bill HR6049)
  • NO on tax incentives for renewable energy (Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Tax Act; Bill H.R.5351)
  • NO on investing in homegrown biofuel (New Direction for Energy Independence; Bill HR3221)
  • NO on removing oil & gas exploration subsidies (Creating Long-Term Energy Alternatives for the Nation(CLEAN); Bill HR 6 ("First 100 hours"))
  • NO on starting implementation of Kyoto Protocol (Amendment sponsored by Olver, D-MA; Bill HR 4690)
  • NO on protecting free-roaming horses and burros (Restore Our American Mustangs Act; Bill H.R.1018)
  • YES on barring EPA from regulating greenhouse gases (Energy Tax Prevention Act; Bill H.910)
  • YES on de-authorizing "critical habitat" for endangered species (Threatened and Endangered Species Recovery Act; Bill HR 3824)
  • YES on speeding up approval of forest thinning projects (Healthy Forests Restoration Act; Bill HR 1904)
  • NOT standing up for WE the People

 Public Health

Much like education, health care is a human right. Yet today-- six years after the Affordable Care Act was passed-- nearly 50 million Americans still lack health insurance. And even among individuals who have insurance health care costs are simply too high. As your congressman, I will work with colleagues, communities, and health care professionals to reduce health care costs and ensure that everyone is covered by insurance.

Varasteh’s Congressional Pledge:

  • Health Care is a human right
  • Universal Healthcare - Medicare for all
  • Protect Medicare for seniors
  • Label our genetically engineered food
  • Standing up for WE the People
  • Not for sale

My opponent, Walters, supported YES on the Ryan Budget: Medicare choice, tax & spending cuts (Ryan Budget Plan; Bill HCR34&SCR21). Walters supported NO on expanding the Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP Reauthorization Act; Bill H.R.2). Walters supported NO on giving mental health full equity with physical health (Mental Health and Addiction Equity Act; Bill H.R.1424). Walters supported NO on requiring negotiated Rx prices for Medicare part D (Medicare Prescription Drug Price Negotiation Act; Bill HR 4 ("First 100 hours")). Once again, she is not standing for WE the Peopleshe is standing for special interest Wall Street and Billionaire Class campaign contributors. Walters’ Voting/Support Record:

  • YES on the Ryan Budget: Medicare choice, tax & spending cuts (Ryan Budget Plan; Bill HCR34&SCR21)
  • NO on expanding the Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP Reauthorization Act; Bill H.R.2)

 Energy & Foreign Oil

Although fossil fuels may still be necessary today, there are alternatives available and we must quickly transition to clean energy in order to mitigate the effects of climate change. Using alternative forms of energy will also reduce our dependence on the OPEC cartel and other oil-producing countries.

Varasteh’s Congressional Pledge:

  • Address our contribution to climate change
  • Balance between environment and search for energy
  • Renewable energy tax credits
  • Repeal fossil fuel subsidies
  • Reform energy speculation market
  • Label our genetically engineered food
  • Standing up for WE the People
  • Not for sale

My opponent, Mimi Walters, keeps voting for more oil drilling despite the fact the evidence proves the contrary that this in no way reduces gasoline prices at the pumps. All this does is make more of her wealthy billionaire class contributors wealthier and does not in any way help the middle-class in our district earn more money or create more jobs.

Immigration

There is no need to bankrupt our country by building a costly, ineffective fortress on our border and spending billions of dollars on enforcement. All we need to do is enact a comprehensive immigration reform bill which includes a pathway to citizenship for the millions of hard-working, taxpaying immigrants who have already been living in America for a certain period of time.

Varasteh’s Congressional Pledge:

  • Crack down on employers hiring the undocumented illegally and enforce eVerify
  • Comprehensive Immigration reform, DREAM Act, temporary migrant working visas
  • Standing up for WE the People
  • Not for sale

My opponent, Mimi Walters, has not only endorsed Donald Trump and his outrageous policies, but has also supported him since before the Republican convention. She supported YES on building a fence along the Mexican border (Secure Fence Act; Bill H R 6061). Walters supported NO on more immigrant visas for skilled workers (Bill introduced by Smith, R-TX.; Bill HR 3736). Walters is not standing up for WE the People. She is working for her Wall Street and Billionaire Class campaign contributors. See which industries are Walters' largest contributors here!

Walters’ Voting/Support Record:

  • YES on building a fence along the Mexican border (Secure Fence Act; Bill H R 6061)
  • NO on more immigrant visas for skilled workers (Bill introduced by Smith, R-TX.; Bill HR 3736)
  • NOT standing up for WE the People

 Veterans

Military veterans are important members of our community and they deserve our gratitude. As a country, we must ensure our military veterans are cared for in a manner that honors their service to America. Accordingly, it's essential that congress fully funds and expands the Veterans Affairs Department so that veterans have timely access to quality health care and other critical services. We must also fully restore cuts to military pensions insisted upon by Republicans in the last few budget deals.

Varasteh’s Congressional Pledge:

  • Post-9/11 GI Bill
  • Support Women Veterans Access to Quality Care
  • Restore all cuts to military pensions
  • Fully fund and expand the VA
  • Substantially improve the processing of Veterans’ claims for compensation
  • Expand the VA’s Caregivers Program
  • Expand mental health services for Veterans
  • Make comprehensive dental care available to all veterans at the VA
  • Standing up for WE the People
  • Not for sale

My opponent, Mimi Walters, preaches that she is pro-military. But in reality she is pro-military-industrial-complex and against fair veterans benefits and rights. She has not supported the “restoring all cuts to military pensions” proposal. She has not supported Women Veterans Access to Quality Care Act, which requires VA facilities to meet the needs of women veterans and every VA medical center to have obstetricians or gynecologists on staff. She has not supported the Post-9/11 GI Bill, which would give a new generation of veterans, servicemembers, and dependents an opportunity to obtain a college degree. Once again, she isn't working for WE the People. Instead, she is working for her Wall Street and Billionaire Class campaign contributors. See which industries are Walters' largest contributors here!

Walters’ Voting/Support Record:

  • NO on legislation to restore all cuts to military pensions
  • NO on Women Veterans Access to Quality Care Act
  • NO on the Post-9/11 GI Bill
  • NOT standing up for WE the People

Seniors

Our seniors have worked hard their whole lives, and they must continue to enjoy the fruits of their labor. By strengthening Social Security and Medicare we can make sure that seniors are cared for a way that reflects their long-time contribution to our communities.

Contrary to some people’s beliefs, Social Security and Medicare programs are NOT ‘entitlement programs’. They are a kind of insurance account we all pay into, ONLY to retrieve what we’ve been paying into during our entire working life, after reaching our retirement age. They are very successful programs that have had a very positive effect on our society. Before these programs were created, our seniors were suffering in poverty at an alarming rate. Since the inception of these programs, our senior poverty rate has been dropping considerably.

Medicare was designed to provide health insurance for our seniors, and it was created in 1965 under the leadership of Lyndon B. Johnson. However, it took almost 40 years for Congress to enact a law which authorized Medicare to pay for prescription drugs. In 2003, Congress passed the Medicare Modernization Act (MMA) under the shortsighted leadership of George W. Bush. This act added a “Part D” to the Medicare section of the social security laws.

Medicare is an extremely successful senior health insurance program-- in fact, so successful, that it can operate efficiency even though only 3% of Medicare’s budget is spent on overhead costs. Compare this number to other private health insurance companies! Because private companies must give a large portion of their income to shareholders and executives, a whopping 30-35% of the average private insurer’s budget is spent on dividend payments, lavish executive compensation packages (that often include huge bonuses), and other overhead costs.

Many people were hoping that Part D would finally give seniors a chance to access affordable medicine. However, Part D explicitly prohibited the government from negotiating directly with drug companies for volume discounts, thereby giving drug companies the green light to set any price they want. Not surprisingly, big pharma set high prices and the government has had no choice but to cover these costs.

Varasteh’s Congressional Pledge:

  • Defend and strengthen Social Security for seniors
  • Defend and strengthen Medicare for seniors
  • Increase IRA limits
  • Reform pension plans
  • Standing up for WE the People
  • Not for sale

My opponent, Mimi Walters, supported YES on reducing tax payments on Social Security benefits (Bill sponsored by Archer, R-TX; Bill HR 4865). Walters Supported NO on strengthening the Social Security Lockbox (Motion to Recommit introduced by Rangel, D-NY; Bill HR 1259). Walters supported YES to reduce taxes on Social Security earnings (Contract with America 93-CWA9).

Walters supported YES on Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act (Bill sponsored by Hastert, R-IL; Bill HR 1). Walters voted NO on Medicare Prescription Drug Price Negotiation Act of 2015 (Bill sponsored by Welch; D-VT; Bill HR 3061). She wants to bankrupt Social Security and Medicare programs as soon as possible. She is considered anti-senior by the Alliance for Retired Americans.  Once again, she isn't working for WE the People. Instead, she is working for her Wall Street and Billionaire Class campaign contributors. See which industries are Walters' largest contributors here!

Walters’ Voting/Support Record:

  • YES on reducing tax payments on Social Security benefits (Bill sponsored by Archer, R-TX; Bill HR 4865)
  • NO on strengthening the Social Security Lockbox (Motion to Recommit introduced by Rangel, D-NY; Bill HR 1259)
  • YES on reducing taxes on Social Security earnings
  • YES on Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act (Bill sponsored by Hastert, R-IL; Bill HR 1)
  • NO on Medicare Prescription Drug Price Negotiation Act of 2015 (Bill sponsored by Welch, D-VT; Bill HR 3061)
  • NOT standing up for WE the People

 Women

I believe a woman has the right to choose what to do with her body, and that government must not have any involvement in this choice. Accordingly, I think we should defend-- not cut-- family planning services such as Planned Parenthood.

As your congressman, I will fight to ensure that women receive salaries equal to their male counterparts. It's disgraceful that today, in 21st -Century America, women still make only 79 cents for every dollar men in similar positions make. I will make it a cornerstone of my agenda to fight for equal pay for women. We cannot sit idly by while hard-working Americans continue to suffer from wage discrimination simply on account of their gender, age, or ethnicity.

Varasteh’s Congressional Pledge:

  • Government out of our private lives
  • Woman’s right to choose what to do with her body
  • Pro-family planning
  • Standing up for WE the People
  • Not for sale

My opponent, Mimi Walters, voted NO on every pro-choice bill and voted YES on every anti-choice bill proposed in Congress and California's Senate and Assembly, for more than a decade. She apparently feels, in this case at least, that government does have the right to invade our private lives in making a decision that should be between the woman, her doctor, and God. Once again, she isn't working for WE the People. Instead, she is working for her Wall Street and Billionaire Class campaign contributors. See which industries are Walters' largest contributors here!

Walters’ Voting/Support Record:

  • NO on pro-choice bills
  • YES on anti-choice bills
  • NOT standing up for WE the People

 LGBTQ

Marriage has become better defined as a union between two people who love one another, and there is absolutely no reason why gay and lesbian spouses shouldn't enjoy the same rights as other married couples. Our constitution guarantees and protects the rights and freedoms of ALL of our citizens-- regardless of their age, race, gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity. I firmly support LGBTQ rights.

As a firm supporter of LGBTQ rights, I will push to put an end to all forms of discrimination against our LGBTQ brothers and sisters. Legal protections against wage and employment discrimination must also be put in place to ensure that LGBTQ individuals can fully contribute to our economy and fully participate in building strong, tolerant, and vibrant communities.

Varasteh’s Congressional Pledge:

  • Married LGBTQ couples should enjoy the same rights as other married couples
  • Prohibit LGBTQ marriage discrimination
  • Address school bullying
  • Expand hate crimes to include crimes against sexual orientation and gender identity
  • Prohibit LGBTQ and gender identity wage and employment discriminations

My opponent, Mimi Walters, has done nothing for our district-- or our nation for that matter-- to help the LGBTQ community in any way. She has been in Congress and California’s Senate and Assembly for more than a decade fighting against LGBTQ rights at every opportunity. She has put her personal views above the rights our Constitution grants to everyone, including our LGBTQ brothers and sisters. Once again, she isn’t working for WE the People. Instead, she is working for her Wall Street and Billionaire Class campaign contributors. See which industries are Walters' largest contributors here!
