Even though NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement), signed into law by President Clinton, was supported by every living former President (Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Bush), most of the nation's governors, and leaders in both parties, I believe that it has hurt us more than it has helped us.

My opponent, Walters, supported YES on implementing North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) (NAFTA Implementation Bill; Bill HR 3450). Walters supported YES on implementing Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) (CAFTA Implementation Bill; Bill HR 3045). She supports and intends to vote YES on implementing the new trade deal Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). Based on her voting record, her position is very clear on free trade. She is not fighting for WE the People. She is working for her Wall Street and Billionaire Class campaign contributors. See which industries are Walters' largest contributors here!

One way I, as your congressman, would like to make globalization fair for us Americans, especially many of us losing jobs that are being internationally outsourced, is to impose tariffs against countries that manipulate or undervalue their currency. Manufacturers in the United States not only haven’t been able to be competitive overseas, but quite often they haven’t even been able to be competitive within our own borders. A Chinese made product sold here, properly marked up via tariffs imposed, would rarely be cheaper than if it was made right here in the good old U S of A. This would bring back much of the manufacturing jobs lost to multi-national corporations. Germany has done this in their country and they’re prospering from it. This can be done and will be pursued by me, as your congressman.

Walters’ Voting/Support Record:

  • YES on implementing North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) (NAFTA Implementation Bill; Bill HR 3450)
  • YES on implementing Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) (CAFTA Implementation Bill; Bill HR 3045)
  • Supports and intends to vote YES on implementing the new trade deal Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)
  • NOT standing up for WE the People

Varasteh’s Congressional Pledge:

  • Impose tariffs against countries that manipulate or undervalue their currency
  • Get us out of unfair free trade agreements
  • Standing up for WE the People
  • Not for sale
